A six session beginner's course to introduce you to the sport of kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), run by Paddle UK qualified coaches.

Cost: £90

Thursday evenings: 06 Jun, 13 Jun, 20 Jun, 27 Jun, 04 Jul, 11 Jul

The first session, on 06 Jun, will be based in an indoor swimming pool to introduce the equipment, learn basic paddle strokes and safe capsizing.
Subsequent sessions will mainly be based in the sea, but may be switched to the pool depending on weather conditions (and an additional session will be added if a session needs to be cancelled).
Pool sessions start at 20:45, Sea sessions start at 18:30.

A general outline of the course includes:

  • Details of the Club and its operating procedures
  • Equipment, clothing and safety
  • Manual handling / lifting and moving your kayak
  • Entering and exiting your kayak
  • Basic kayak paddle strokes, moving forwards, backwards, sideways and turning
  • Capsizes and rescues (rescuing and being rescued)
  • Use of support strokes to prevent capsize
  • Understanding the environment and risks

All participants must be able to swim at least 50m.

Under-18's must be accompanied by a (non-paddling) parent/guardian.

Participant numbers are limited, but depending on demand, we may run additional courses (including ladies only or juniors only).
