Club Events
Jellyfish

There have been recent reports of jellyfish invading the south coast - including sightings by club members out paddling!

They are thought to be the Cyanea lamarckii (or Blue jellyfish) which, as the name suggests, have a blue or purple through to yellow colouration and grow to a size between 10-20cm. They have many stinging tentacles which can produce a slight burning sensation if touched but this subsides after about 10 minutes, leaving no mark. The jellyfish often float around the shallower water rather than deep water further out so now might be a good time to perfect your rolling technique!

1066 Marathon Results 16 May 2010
Junior paddlers

There was a good turn out for the 1066 Marathon on Sunday, helped by the pleasant weather.

In all there were 76 paddlers (39 Juniors, 15 Seniors and 22 Veterans).

Feedback was very positive:

My ...(son)... is absolutely delighted with his medal from the Lightning race. He wore it in bed last night and took it to school this morning.

Felt it run very well.
The numbers in div 4,5 and 6 K1 was about right.

Thanks for the results and a very big thanks to all who organised the event from the ever ageing Rabbit Independent Paddlers.

Clubmark Presentation 12 May 2010
Club Mark Logo

We were presented with a well earned Clubmark award at our clubhouse on Wednesday evening.

Chris Edge, the South East Paddlesport Development Officer from Canoe England, presented the certificate to Rocheen Durrant, our Clubmark officer. Clubmark is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. The Club now joins only a few other clubs in Hastings to have achieved this and is the only Canoe Club in East Sussex and Kent with the award.

The evening started at 7pm with a buffet and drinks reception for club members and invited guests. The event provided an opportunity for the guests to see the improvements to the club's facilities and equipment, some of which has been achieved through generous development grants. It was a good opportunity to discuss the club's role in developing kayaking for local youngsters with Adrian Gaylon, the Sports Development Officer for Rother District Council and Christine Lane from the Hastings Youth Trust.

Helping us to celebrate were representatives from the local Coastguards, Epic Life and the West of Haven Beach Association as well as members from the canoe clubs at Addlestone and Shepperton.

We would like to thank Hastings Youth Trust, and Canoe England for their support to the development of the club.
