Trip Description - The Bitches

alt
The Bitches are called the Bitches because of the shipwrecks they have caused. The Bitches and the whelps are a line of rocks and reef in between Ramsey island and the Welsh mainland (of which the water rushes over). They are well known throughout the play boating and sea kayaking world as some of the best whitewater in or around
Britain.

For a full write-up, read 'The Welsh Rivers' by Chris Sladdens (pages 339-341).

It's a half mile journey offshore to the Bitches, which are formed as the tide comes in. The water is channeled in between RamseyIsland and the welsh mainland, speeding up in this narrow gap. It rushes over the shallow reef in the channel (the Bitches).Because of the distance to paddle out to the Bitches and back you must be careful of your choice of boat.

The Bitches are very weather dependent and so are difficult to predict accurately. Usually, the higher the tide, the bigger the water. The bitches are good from about 3 hours before high tide, building with the tide. This trip is very time orientated, and when I say go we go and when I say come home we do so.

We will be camping at Rosson Ganol which is on the road to St Justinian Bay where the Lifeboat is stationed.
St David’s, the smallest city in the country is about 2Km away.

If there is any one who wants to come on this trip and not paddle there is plenty to do. The coastal footpath is just a stones throw away, walk along the cliffs and watch the porpoise come through with the race. Coasteering, which is walking out along the rocks when you can go no further you jump in and swim to the next rocks, or jumping off the walls into The Blue Lagoon. Boats offer trips out to and around RamseyIsland, which is a nature reserve. WhitesandsBay where the paddlers can return to is an excellent surfing bay. This area is excellent for cycling and climbing.
